This offense will be used against a 2-3 (a.k.a. 2-1-2) zone.
This offense has 3 and 2 interior players. It is a pass-oriented offense aimed at getting the ball into the lane. A few guidlines for the offense:
The following videos show player positioning as the ball moves from side to side.
These videos show movement when the ball is passed to one side and then back around to the other.
When the ball is passed to the right, the 5 (black) player moves out to the short corner lookin for a pass.
If the ball is passed to the 5, then the 4 (blue) player immediately cuts down to the block looking for the ball. Notice that the 3 (red) wing player cuts into the top of the lane also looking for a pass.
If the 5 (black) player cannot get the ball into the 4 (blue) or 3 (red) players, he should quickly white it back out to the 2 (white) player.
We want to move the ball to the opposite side quickly to try to catch the other team out of position. Notice how the players move back into their original spots and then shift to the left as the ball moves.
In addition to the general back-and-forth motion, we have three set screen plays the team can use to get an open look at the basket. Each of the set plays requires the team to listen to the call from coach or the point guard. The team should listen to the last digit in the number.
For example, it coach called 41, the play would be "1" below because 41 ends with a 1. Please note that these plays can be started by passing to either wing - the videos below show examples of starting both right or left.
Play 4 involves the "4" player setting a screen to allow the wing to drive down into the short corner. If the defender does not pop out to guard the wing, he should look for a good shot. If the defender does pop out, the wing should pass into the 4 or 5. The wing can always pass back out to the point guard to reset.
Play 4 has the 5 setting a screen/pick for the wing who received the pass. The wing should drive hard to the middle and look for a good shot. The 5 should roll and look for a quick pass. If neither is a good option, the wing should pass back to the point guard to reset. Other teammates should look to get open for a skip pass!
Play 1 is a quick pass back to the point guard (the 1) and has the 5 setting a screen on the top/opposite guard. The 1 should drive quickly into the lane and look to shoot. The 5 should roll looking for a pass, and the 4 should move to an open spot. The 1 can pass out to a wing to reset the offense.
