Zone (2-3) Defense

We will shift to zone when needed - usually top stop drives or close-in shots.

Our main zone defense is a 2-3, sometimes called a 2-1-2. To run an effective 2-3, the team must:

  • STOP THE BALL (the first rule of defense). There should be no layups.
  • Communicate (the second rule of any defense).
  • Have active hands and good defensive positioning.
  • Move everytime the ball moves (e.g. after a pass).

2-3 Zone (Zone)

Our zone defense requires similar positioning and effort to our pack line (base) defense. The pictures below show how players should guard their man based on where the ball is located in a 2-3 zone. Positioning flips if the ball goes to the left side.

At Top

  • Player 1 is applying pressure on the ball.
  • Players 3, 4, and 5 are in their normal positions.
  • Player 2 is fronting the high post.

High Post

  • Player 5 steps up to guard the high post.
  • Players 3 and 4 collapse into the lane to help.
  • Players 1 and 2 also step in for help.

On Side

  • After the pass to the side, Player 2 covers the ball.
  • Player 1 slides down to cover the high post, and Player 3 slides into the lane.
  • Player 4 fronts any post player, with Player 5 in support.

On Side with A Player in Corner

  • Player 4 cheats a little to the corner if there is a player there.
  • Player 1 drops back into the lane since there is no high post player.
  • Players 2, 3, and 5 are in the same position as "On Side".

In the Corner

  • Player 4 guards the ball, and Player 5 denys the pass into the post.
  • Player 2 slides back to the box.
  • Players 1 and 3 come into the lane.
